And the Moon Fails to Rise.
These are the lyrics running through my head this morning. Planted by the Gary Numan song “When the World comes Apart”. I think I have been making up for lost time consuming as much of his music since I rediscovered this artist with the song and video for “My name is Ruin“.
Usually what I call an earworm manifests itself without a conscious train of thought trail, usually just find the song running through my head when I wake up, but other times there is a trigger. Today’s song was triggered by a meme a friend posted on Facebook. A quote attributed to Simon Pegg. “I wish there was a place where atheists could all get together and sing songs about physics. I love being a rationalist but it’s lonely”
I wondered what songs about physics there could be and remembered “Why Does the Sun Shine?” which promptly got stuck in my head.
They Might be Giants covered this 1959 song written by Hy Zaret and Lou Singer, performed by Tom Glazer and Dottie Evens.
Turns out it may not get sung in atheist meetings because science has developed new findings and TMBG has even recorded a correction song.
At any rate, “Why Does the Sun Shine?” is a fun enjoyable song and even if the atheists won’t be singing it at their physics meeting I bet there will be a fine selection of They Might Be Giants songs sung anyway. They have a whole album of science songs “Here Comes Science”
And if the John’s are ever in your neighbourhood, go see them, they are one of the best live acts I have ever seen.
This month’s Sketchfest was July 21,22, and 23rd, and I was struggling with this one. The prompts I worked on were Abyssal Mermaid, Butterfly Dreams, and Solar Eclipse.
I was most happy with Butterfly dreams, but I would have to say most inspired by Solar Eclipse because I decided to redo it a couple of times over the last couple of days.
I did the extra Sun/Moon images on water colour paper, so perhaps one day I will work on coloured versions.
Today I woke up to the song “Lovers on the Sun” David Guetta, featuring Sam Martin, so I figured I would feature some images showcasing the sun.
These were the first images I was thinking of when I started my search:
which lead to these images:
which brought up an image inspired by a dream, from which I wrote this short poem:
I think I’ll be the sun today, in spite of what my mother will say.
A ray of light will be my smile,
I’ll wear a crown of gold
and my dress will be the sky.
which inspired this quick drawing:
which developed into a linocut print:
which I coloured digitally today:
So more than just a song inspired by an earworm today. You’ve gotten some insight into the creative process!
I don’t always go on such journey’s to get to where I go, but often it can work this way. Inspiration comes from so many places, in so many ways. If you are so inclined I would love to see some of your own creative methods.
